AIPS is co-sponsored the 9th Annual Pakistan Conference: Spaces of Capital at the University of Michigan on March 30, 2019. This conference brought together vibrant scholars around the intersection of economy and politics. The first panel of the conference dealt with urban infrastructure with a paper by Amen Jaffer (LUMS) on waste management and a paper by Maira Haya (Stanford) on water. The second panel examined the relation between contemporary rural economic arrangements and long-standing social groups like caste and lineage with papers by Muhammad Ali Jan (Oxford) and Nicolas Martin (University of Zurich). The conference ended with a screening of the film The Rebel Optimist, about the acclaimed activist Perween Rahman, a former participant in the UM Pakistan conference.

History Workshops in Pakistan

Robert Nichols, David Gilmartin, and Matthew Cook organized and held two workshops for junior Pakistani scholars working towards PhDs in History. Individual projects were presented and discussed in detail, while workshop sessions also opened conversations about research methods, scholarly literature and argumentation, and recent examples of successfully completed academic History books of interest to scholars, including historians of Pakistan-related issues, themes, and historical perspectives. 13 individuals participated in the Punjab Higher Education Commission Lahore Workshop, and another 13 participated in the Quaid-i-Azam University Workshop. Language Teaching in the 21st Century

Dr. Patricia Pashby led a series of seven workshop sessions, titled “Language Teaching in the 21st Century,” and ten individual mentoring sessions as part of the Junior Faculty Training and Exchange Program. She mentored junior scholars teaching English or other foreign language courses at the University of Education in Lahore. Dr. Pashby’s approach was “hands-on” to support and demonstrate her goal of encouraging interactive, student-centered learning. For more information on the project click here.

CAORC-AIPS Faculty Development Seminar

Applications are open for the "Religion and Culture in the Postcolonial City" seminar, occurring June 8-22. If you are a community college or MSI faculty member, this seminar is for you. This seminar will provide participants with firsthand experiences of various cultural sites and practices in Lahore. Applications close on February 18th!

Naila Mahmood Participated in the Pakistan Lecture Series!

Naila Mahmood is a highly regarded visual artist, writer and documentary photographer from Karachi whose work on the complexities of urban space has been widely featured in gallery shows, museum exhibitions, and in print. From September 19th to 22nd, Naila featured her work on women and food security as part of its Rabb Symposium on urban sustainability at North Carolina State University. On September 24th to 25th, Cornell University hosted her presentation in their weekly seminar series, focusing on specific visual projects she has completed. Naila also presented her work as part of brown University’s series “Art History form the South 2018-19" on September 25th and 26th. To find out more about Naila's lecture series, click here.

BULPIP-AIPS Fall 2017 Fellowship Announcement

The Berkeley-AIPS Urdu Language Program in Pakistan (BULPIP-AIPS) is accepting applications for its Fall 2017 intensive Urdu language immersion program based at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in Pakistan. Jointly administered by the America Institute of Pakistan Studies (AIPS) and the Berkeley Urdu Language Program in Pakistan (BULPIP) at the University of California, Berkeley, this Urdu language program will offer daily classroom instruction, five days a week, for approximately fifteen weeks. Classes will be small and individual tutorials provided. There will be regular assignments outside of class and special emphasis will be placed on connecting with the local speech community as well as self-management of learning. Participants will need to take part in all program events, such as attending films, plays and other cultural activities. The program will award annual fellowships to up to ten US-based students.

The American Institute of Pakistan Studies and the Berkeley Urdu Language Program in Pakistan invite applications for appointment as a Program Manager to coordinate their semester-long intensive Urdu language program. The appointment is for five months (August – December, 2017). The Program Manager will be based in Lahore (Pakistan), must be able to travel in and to Pakistan, as well as participate in a pre-departure orientation in May 2017 at the University of California, Berkeley.
