										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>AIPS is co-sponsored the 9th Annual Pakistan Conference: Spaces of Capital at the University of Michigan on March 30, 2019. This conference brought together vibrant scholars around the intersection of economy and politics. The first panel of the conference dealt with urban infrastructure with a paper by Amen Jaffer (LUMS) on waste management and a paper by Maira Haya (Stanford) on water. The second panel examined the relation between contemporary rural economic arrangements and long-standing social groups like caste and lineage with papers by Muhammad Ali Jan (Oxford) and Nicolas Martin (University of Zurich). The conference ended with a screening of the film&nbsp;<em>The Rebel Optimist,&nbsp;</em>about the acclaimed activist Perween Rahman, a former participant in the UM Pakistan conference.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Berkeley-AIPS Urdu Language Program in Pakistan (BULPIP-AIPS) is accepting applications for its Fall 2017 intensive Urdu language immersion program based at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in Pakistan. Jointly administered by the America Institute of Pakistan Studies (AIPS)&nbsp;and the <a href="http://southasia.berkeley.edu/">Berkeley Urdu Language Program in Pakistan</a> (BULPIP) at the University of California, Berkeley, this Urdu language program will offer daily classroom instruction, five days a week, for approximately fifteen weeks. Classes will be small and individual tutorials provided. There will be regular assignments outside of class and special emphasis will be placed on connecting with the local speech community as well as self-management of learning. Participants will need to take part in all program events, such as attending films, plays and other cultural activities.&nbsp;The program will award annual fellowships to up to ten US-based students.</p>
