Digital Humanities Workshop – Part 2

Five Pakistani junior scholars traveled to the US as part of the second half of an AIPS Digital Humanities Program that started in Pakistan during May of 2019. They attended multiple workshops in North Carolina, including one hosted by the Triangle Digital Humanities Network. They also engaged in a series of one-on-one mentoring sessions with faculty from North Carolina Central University.

South Asian Language Instructor Training Certificate Program

Jahan Zeb Ahmed, Ashok Kumar Khatri and Zahid Hussain were supported by AIPS to attend the South Asian Language Instructor Training Certificate Program! This language pedagogy training program took place at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from June 10 to 21, 2019. Through this program, the participants attended sessions on basic language teaching methodologies for South Asian languages, met with Pedagogy Specialists for individualized support and observed language courses at the South Asia Summer Language Institute (SASLI).

Digital Humanities Workshop – Part 1

Dr. Matthew Cook, Dr. Collie Fulford and Dr. W. Russell Robinson led a workshop on Digital Humanities in Lahore, Pakistan!

They utilized the skills they developed as fellows of the NCCU-Duke Digital Humanities Initiative to work with 11 junior Pakistani faculty to build their Digital Humanities skills. The workshop focus revolved around how to integrate these skills into teaching and classroom activities. More information will be coming soon on part 2 of this program!

Religion and Culture in the Postcolonial City

Welcome back community college and MSI faculty and administrators! This group participated in the CAORC-AIPS Faculty Development Seminar on "Religion and Culture in the Postcolonial City: Lahore 2019."

The program sought to provide the participants with firsthand experiences of various cultural sites and practices in Lahore for incorporation in their future course development at their home institutions. They also visited Islamabad, attended lectures and met with Pakistani faculty and researchers.

Archaeology Mentorship at UW-Madison

Dr. Nafees Ahmed participated in a six-week mentoring program with Dr. J. Mark Kenoyer at UW-Madison as part of the AIPS Junior Faculty Mentoring and Exchange Program. He gained training on a variety of archaeological tools and technologies, enhanced his teaching skills, and learned about the diversity of cultures in the U.S. through attending cultural events and festivals.

AIPS-Sponsored Participants Attended a Fake News Conference

Jill Filipovic, Ty McCormick and Lauren Bohn conducted a series of workshops and lectures/discussions on a variety of topics related to journalism in conjunction with a conference on media in Pakistan, “Fake News and Facts in our Region” organized by the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS) in Islamabad.

Filipovic, McCormick, and Bohn’s workshops and lectures, held in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi, brought together journalists, students and stakeholders in Pakistan, opening lines of engagement and information with the U.S. journalists and reached nearly 500 people. “Air Quality in Pakistan” Program

Dr. Filippelli, an Air Quality Fellow for Embassy Islamabad and an expert in air quality and health, delivered a series of lectures, workshops, and demonstrations to raise awareness of issues related to air quality and build dialogs among university researchers, students, governmental, and non-governmental entities on the topic. Through this AIPS-sponsored series of events, which occurred in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, Dr. Filippelli interacted with approximately 1000 people over the course of 11 days.

A greater awareness of the negative impacts of air pollution on public health has made this is a prime issue in many countries. Pakistan currently has almost no air quality monitoring capabilities, thus it is difficult to assess the true impacts of air quality on health and nearly impossible to determine and eradicate the sources of air pollution. In line with a continued USG policy of constructing air quality monitoring facilities on Embassies and Posts in vulnerable countries, the posts in Pakistan are bringing a number of testing facilities online. With the US posts bringing live air quality data online and open to the people of Pakistan, we may be seeing a key first step to dealing with this issue in a constructive and positive way.

Dynamics of Countering Human Trafficking in South Asia

Dr. Hassan Abbas led two “Dynamics of Countering Human Trafficking in South Asia” workshops in Islamabad and Lahore, Pakistan from December 17th-23rd. They focused on fully understanding the nature and magnitude of human trafficking in the broader South Asian region and were geared towards developing local capacity to counter this challenge as well as studying the dynamics that allow this menace to thrive at a global scale. A series of structured discussions considered the personal and social consequences of trafficking (violence, health, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.), the ways that trafficking affects children, and the strategies that victims adopt in order to survive. The groups also assessed a variety of efforts being made to help trafficked victims. Over 20 participants attended each workshop. This program was funded by the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan.

“New Developments and Debates in Islamic Studies” Workshop

Dr. Marcia Hermansen, Director of the Islamic World Studies program at Loyola University Chicago, led an AIPS-sponsored workshop on "New Developments and Debates in Islamic Studies" at the International Islamic University in Islamabad, Pakistan! This five-day workshop was designed to communicate important trends, publications, and pedagogical strategies to early career faculty from diverse Pakistani Universities.
