Call for Submission - 2017-18 S.S. Pirzada Dissertation Prize on Pakistan!!

AIPS parterner institution, the Institute for South Asia Studies, and the Berkeley Pakistan Initiative are delighted to announce the inaugural S. S. Pirzada Dissertation Prize for 2017-18. They invite submission of the dissertations on Pakistan (or the region that is now Pakistan) in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Visual & Fine Arts, Law, and Public Health. 
Only dissertations submitted at an accredited North American or European Union-based University will be accepted. The prize comes with a $2,500 award. For information about the previous prizewinner click here

Dissertations submitted for consideration must have been filed between September 2, 2016, and September 1, 2017.

The submission package must include the following:

  1. A pdf abstract (<1000 words),
  2. A pdf curriculum vitae (please include a contact number)
  3. A pdf copy of the dissertation,
  4. A confidential letter from a member of the dissertation committee that speaks to the merits of the dissertation with respect to the current state of the field and the innovation that the work entails.

All should be submitted via email to Ms. Puneeta Kala (pkala@berkeley.edu) no later than December 1, 2017. Late submissions will not be accepted.

A Prize Committee will determine the winner. In 2017-18 the Prize Committee will comprise Prof. Manan Ahmed (Columbia University), Prof. Munis Faruqui (UC Berkeley), Prof. David Gilmartin (North Carolina State University), Prof. Farooq Hamid (UC Riverside), and Prof. Saba Mahmood (UC Berkeley).

The result will be announced on the Institute for South Asia Studies website on February 16, 2018, around 5 pm (Pacific Standard Time). The winner will be expected to attend an all expense paid award conferral ceremony at UC Berkeley in March or April 2018.
